On Oct. 8, Williamson County commissioners approved the inclusion of the city of Leander on its list of cities in the Williamson County and Cities Health District.
The cooperative district established in 1989 provides public health service including immunizations, daycare center and foster care inspections, disease reporting and control, WIC assistance and disaster preparedness for Williamson County and its residents.
Leander City Council unanimously approved joining the district Sept. 19 at a cost of $62,611 annually. The city previously voluntarily contributed $20,000 per year to the WCCHD without formal representation on the board of health, WCCHD Communications Director Marcus Cooper said.
"It basically brings Leander to be table to be able to have full involvement and discussion of all the issues of health and wellness in Williamson County," Cooper said. "If you are a citizen in Leander, you will have a representative on the board of health, available during the discussion of issues like providing WIC services in Williamson County, programs like mosquito surveillance and issues like influenza and the emergency management system."
