Water issues

A new water contract with Liberty Hill was approved in August, injecting about $500,000 per year into Leander's utility fund. City Council agreed to treat and transport up to 600 acre-feet of water, owned by Liberty Hill, from Lake Travis. The city also completed construction in November on a new water tower that doubles the previous storage capacity.

Top issues for 2014

Planned road work

City staffers have begun preliminary road engineering for the widening of FM 2243 and Bagdad Road improvements. Mayor Chris Fielder said the city wants to have shovel-ready projects for Williamson County to consider in its first allocation of road bond money, which was approved by voters in November.

Retail recruitment

Randalls has begun preliminary site work at the intersection of Lakeline Boulevard and Crystal Falls Parkway for its future store, which neighbors commercial development The Shops at Crystal Falls. Fielder said he anticipates another large retail announcement in the first quarter.

TOD district development

The city is working to rebrand and redefine the area near the train station known as the transit-oriented development district. Crescent Properties plans to begin constructing new residences in the area, and bond funds for a Leander Austin Community College campus in the district could go before voters in November. If approved, Fielder said the campus could accelerate developer interest.

Leander City Council meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 N. Brushy St., Leander.

Terms and compensation

Members are elected to three-year terms and can be reimbursed for travel, meals, conferences and other expenses directly relating to their role on City Council.
