Grant helps Leander library purchase computers

By early May the Leander Public Library will have six new laptop computers for class members due to a $5,000 Texas Book Festival technology grant.

Previously students have needed to use public computers in the library's main area, said Priscilla Donovan, Leander Public Library director. Students using the new computers for software training or GED test preparation might feel more free to ask questions if they are in an enclosed classroom space, Donovan said.

The library's GED preparation classes are at 2 p.m. on second and fourth Sundays every month.

"We're hoping to have a more-scheduled program," Donovan said. "We're going to do some surveys, find out what things people really need or if they are just looking for job resources."

Library staff will also use the grant funds for printing costs and to purchase a secure cart for the computers. Diane Hess, treasurer for the Leander Library Foundation, said the organization first applied for a grant in 2013, yet only succeeded with the second attempt.

Hess said having computers in a separate learning area is especially necessary for test-takers.

"They'll have to go online to take the GED, so they really need a private place," she said.

Donovan said the library may apply for another grant in 2015.
