Amorada Tequila

Terray Glasman, originally from Mexico, said she came into the tequila business because of her passion for the product.

“I grew up drinking tequila the way Europeans drink fine wine,” Glasman said. “It’s in my blood. … Every tequila is different, but I wanted something that was really smooth with no sugars, no additives.”

Glasman started her business, Amorada Tequila, in 2014. The business distills its blanco and reposado tequilas in Magdalena, Mexico, and has an office in Cedar Park. On June 1, Glasman plans to relocate her office to Leander, which will allow more space for her business.

To fulfill Glasman’s philanthropic passion, 10 cents of each bottle sold are donated to local nonprofit organizations. In addition, Glasman plans to launch a nonprofit arm of Amorada in November called Amorada Love Movement. Glasman said her goal is to find a location for her nonprofit to grow organic products and teach children about health, cooking and nutrition. She is still searching for a location.

“Children are our future, and they require time, patience [and] understanding,” she said.

Heroe De Leon

Located on Research Boulevard in Austin in between Lake Creek Parkway and Pecan Park Boulevard, Antonio Murguia runs the operations for his business, Heroe De Leon, which is named after his family’s legacy.

Murguia, a corporate law attorney, said the business’s name can be traced back to his great-grandfather, whom he nicknamed the “hero of Leon” because of his fight as a general in the Mexican Revolution against Pancho Villa in the early 1900s.

“We didn’t invent anything. The hero is real,” he said. “We feel proud because we have a real story.”

Murguia decided to start his own company after a traumatic motorcycle accident in 2011, in which a truck hit him and ran over him in Mexico. During his recovery time in the hospital, Murguia said he pondered what to do next with his life.

“I wanted to create a project, some sort of a legacy for my kids,” he said.

The company’s tequilas include Anejo, Blanco, Diamante, Extra Anejo, Reposado, Leona and Platinum, and are distilled in Jalisco, Mexico.

Square Peg Distilling LLC

Scott Calame, owner of Square Peg Distilling LLC, said he realized he had a unique recipe for an agave spirit with tropical and nuanced flavors while brewing beer at home.

Through experimentation, Calame made a form of agave wine at home before obtaining his license to distill his TexAgave Blue Agave Spirits product at his business in Leander to test different recipes.

“When I developed the formula for TexAgave, I was not really trying … to duplicate the taste or flavor profile of any one particular tequila,” Calame said. “What I wanted to do was develop a product with its own unique flavor profile that was in the tequila region of flavors.”

He said TexAgave can be used to make cocktails including margaritas, palomas and sunrises.

In June, Calame plans to come out with a triple sec to accompany his agave spirit product.

“It’s a true Texas duo of a margarita,” he said.
