Thunderbirds to conduct Austin-area flyover May 13

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron—more commonly known as the Thunderbirds—will conduct a flyover of Austin-area hospitals at 3:30 p.m. May 13.

According to a U.S. Air Force news release, a formation of six F-16C/D Fighting Falcons will conduct a flyover to salute health care workers, first responders and other essential personnel on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. The Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels are participating in Operation America Strong by conducting flyovers at major U.S. cities.

The flyover will last approximately 35 minutes, according to the release. The Austin flyover will be preceded by a San Antonio flyover at 1:30 p.m.

"Residents in these areas will be able to see the flyover from the safety of their home-quarantine and should maintain all social distancing guidelines during this event," the news release said. "They should also refrain from traveling to landmarks, hospitals and gathering in large groups to view the flyover."

A detailed map showing the flyover route will be released May 9, according to the release.

The Thunderbirds team was formed in 1953 to “recruit, retain and inspire past, present and future Airmen,” according to the U.S. Air Force.
