TxDOT to provide update on Toll 183A frontage construction in Cedar Park

Eduardo Garcia, a transportation engineer with the Texas Department of Transportation, will provide an update to Cedar Park City Council on the plan to build Toll 183A frontage roads at the Feb. 13 council meeting.

A nearly 3-mile stretch of Toll 183A, from Avery Ranch Boulevard north to RM 1431, lacks frontage roads. In May, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Transportation Policy Board granted $75 million to TxDOT for the construction of frontage roads along that stretch.

Toll 183A, which first opened in 2007, is an 11.6-mile toll road owned by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority that travels north from SH 45 N to Hero Way in Leander, according to the Mobility Authority. While many lauded the toll road’s construction—former Cedar Park Economic Development Director Phil Brewer said it “opened a whole new development corridor,” according to the Mobility Authority—the north-south road bisected the city, according to Cedar Park Mayor Corbin Van Arsdale.

At a May 10 council meeting when the funding for the frontage roads was made public, Van Arsdale said the toll road has long acted as a barrier between the eastern and western parts of Cedar Park.

The construction of frontage roads will reconnect the city, he said. Motorists must currently must take longer routes when traveling between the eastern and western parts of the city.

Frontage roads already exist from RM 1431 north to Toll 183A’s terminus at Hero Way.

The Mobility Authority plans to eventually extend Toll 183A approximately 6 miles north to Hwy. 29 in Liberty Hill.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The frontage road funding was part of a $500 million grant to TxDOT, with the majority going to I-35 improvements. CAMPO also directed $25 million from the funding to construct a grade separation at the intersection of RM 620 and Anderson Mill Road. This project will help traffic flow on RM 620, according to Van Arsdale at the May 10 meeting.
