During the June 11 College Station City Council meeting, the council heard a presentation advocating for the expansion of micromobility-friendly infrastructure and increased safety precautions throughout the city.

According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, the city had 120 crashes each in 2024 and 2025, including two fatal crashes in 2025 alone.
The presentation noted 79% of the micromobility crashes were at intersections or close to the Texas A&M University campus, something DiMeolo said would be in the master plan.
“It is very important that we work and partner with Texas A&M because so many of these devices start on city property and go into campus, and vice versa,” he said. “For the sake of clarity, we want to make sure the enforcement regulation policies align between the jurisdictions so people know exactly what’s expected of them and how to behave.”

What the council is saying
Multiple council members received the presentation positively, complimenting the idea and the collaboration between the university and the city. Council member Bob Yancy said the shared goal of this idea would be critical for safety around the university.
“We have this large overarching agreement where this would be one chapter in that book, but we have this shared goal of wanting to keep these kids safe,” he said.
Council member Scott Shafer said he wants to make it clear to the city population and the university that they are earnest about this initiative.
“We may have a new crop of 13,000 freshmen students coming in every year,” he said. “We need to be really working to make sure that we’re serious about some of these things.”
What’s next
The council did not vote on any ordinance or measure, but College Station Mayor John Nichols said he hoped the feedback would encourage and help set guidelines for the next presentation. The council is likely to have another hearing about the project later in the year.
Also on the agenda
The council unanimously voted to approve new tourism efforts for the city in collaboration with Texas A&M. According to previous reporting from Community Impact, the city is looking to potentially bring in up to $4 million from these tourism efforts.
