Bryan ISD is set to consider approving multiple items concerning programs for students with disabilities, as well as a karate instruction program for all students at the July 20 meeting.
The overview
The school district is considering contracted services for students who are deaf, dyslexic and those who have general special needs. If approved, the monetary amount of the services requested would be a little over $1 million. Bryan ISD approved a balanced budget for the 2026-27 school year, despite many other districts in the state facing a budget deficit, as Community Impact previously reported.
The district is requesting the services in light of a “critical shortage” in both deaf and special needs curricula, along with a reduction in funds for dyslexia programs. According to agenda material, using contracted services is a “flexible approach [that] allows the district to utilize a pool of approved vendors to fill urgent gaps while maintaining compliance with student service
requirements.”
The district is also deciding on a program that teaches martial arts and character development skills to children. The program, created by the nonprofit organization Kickstart Kids, would be a one-year agreement and would be hosted at the following schools:
- Davila Middle School
- Jane Long Intermediate
- Sam Rayburn Intermediate
- Sadberry Intermediate
- Stephen F. Austin Middle School (three sections starting in August)
Kickstart’s program allows instruction from certified black-belt karate instructors with lessons after school and during the summer. The program would cost the district a total of $320,000, along with an additional fee if the district chooses to expand to other campuses or offer more classes.

Bryan ISD is set to decide on items relating to prekindergarten dual enrollment with childcare centers, the new student code of conduct and a software renewal for ClassLink Single Sign-On.
