The Texas A&M Forest Service has awarded $29.3 million to rural fire departments across the state, including nearly $300,000 going to two volunteer fire departments in Brazos County.

According to a June 5 news release from Texas A&M Forest Service, the award comes from the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, which designates grants to departments in the state of Texas. All departments receiving the funds are volunteer-based, with 531 total departments accepting grants.
The program, which has granted more than $600 million to volunteer fire departments since 2001, uses the Texas A&M Forest Service for assistance with those grants. The Brazos County Precinct 4 Volunteer Fire Department was one of the recipients of the grants, accepting $25,000 for new fire and rescue equipment. The South Brazos County Fire Department also accepted $265,000 for a new large bush truck.
