Bellaire roundup: Council OK's grant for backup generator

Bellaire City Council's April 5 meeting included approval of disaster grant funds for a new generator and the temporary suspension of an ordinance to allow for an upcoming dog event at Evelyn's Park.

Grant funds tapped for generator

Bellaire City Council authorized the city to accept over $180,000 in disaster grant funding from the Texas Division of Emergency Management, funding that will be used to install a permanent diesel generator with an automatic transfer switch at Feld Park.

With a match from the city of over $60,000, the total project cost is $240,000, which will pay for a new backup power system that will allow the city to maintain critical water-system pressure and continuity of operations during prolonged power outages.

“Oftentimes, after a national disaster such as Harvey, the state likes to find projects where they can elevate such things as a generator,” said ChaVonne Sampson, the city’s Director of Development Services.

Council allows Evelyn's Bark and Open Air Market

The Evelyn’s Park Conservancy, the managing group for Evelyn’s Park, can now move forward with its plans to host a “Bark and Open Air Market” for dog owners and their pets.

Bellaire City Council unanimously approved a temporary suspension on a city ordinance that prohibits dogs and cats on all parks and playgrounds, except in the designated area of Lafayette Park.

The event will be held Sunday, May 30, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
