Upper Kirby’s newest cocktail lounge offers tastes of 56 B.C.

After an extended soft opening, Otium officially made its presence known in the Upper Kirby area with a grand opening event Aug. 28, according to its social media.

The upscale cocktail lounge’s Latin mantra, ‘Otium cum Dignitate,’ translates to ‘Leisure with Dignity’ and is inspired by 56 B.C. philosophical writings of ancient Rome.

A closer look

The Otium experience begins with arrival. Through its doors, patrons step into an elegant, old-world-themed gathering space intended to showcase the finer side of Italian drinking culture, per information from an introductory Instagram post.

From meticulously crafted architecture and plush seating to a dimly lit ambiance, Otium is intentional about the mood it creates, regardless of the occasion. Its menu leans into classic Italian flavors through signature cocktails, imported spirits, premium wines and Diadema martini service offerings.

When the evening calls for food, Otium’s shareable options feature light Italian bites, including flatbreads, bruschetta, schiacciata, various protein filets as well as salami and cheese boards, according to the business's social media.

All patrons must comply with Otium’s dress code of business casual, cocktail or elevated evening attire. Space is limited throughout its hours of operation, so walk-ins are currently being accepted based on the volume of guests.
