Officials with Merit Coffee held a grand opening for the brand's first Houston-area cafe July 10. The San Antonio-based coffee shop welcomed over 200 guests and gave away limited-edition tote bags along with signature drinks and pop-ups.
"For years, we've dreamed about bringing Merit to Houston," CEO Bill Ellis said. "Houston has one of the most exciting food and beverage cultures anywhere in the country, and we've been intentional about finding the right neighborhoods, partners and opportunities to establish roots here. Opening our first café in West University is just the beginning."
What's special about it?
The new cafe brings the company's signature hospitality and blend of coffee to the Houston area. Merit Coffee uses coffee beans sourced in Central and South America. It uses its own roastery in San Antonio, where a local team tests, cups and refines each coffee, according to the company's website.
On the menu
Coffee sold at Merit's cafe includes options such as cold brew, espresso, lattes and slow pours. Matcha, iced tea and refreshers are also available for purchase.
As part of its Houston debut, Merit is also partnering with local bakery Cake & Bacon to curate a menu with sweet and savory items such as classic pastries, egg bites and vegan oatmeal bars.

"Whenever we enter a new community, we look for partners who share our commitment to quality and hospitality," Ellis said in a news release. "Cake & Bacon embodies everything we love about Houston's culinary scene, and we're excited to showcase their incredible work in our cafés."
One more thing
Merit Coffee is also poised to open two more cafes in the Greater Houston area in the near future, including one in the Swift Building in the Heights and one in Greenside.
