The locations for four public civic art projects in the Gulfton area have been identified, approved for funding and implementation by Harris County Commissioners during a Feb. 27 court meeting.
About the project
The art initiative in Precinct 4 is in partnership with the Houston Arts Alliance as part of a larger Harris County crime prevention and neighborhood safety program. The $3 million program, Clean Streets, Safe Neighborhoods, originally launched in 2021 targeting 11 communities throughout the county. Gulfton is one of the three neighborhoods identified in Harris County Precinct 4, along with Alief and Sharpstown.
With a $250,000 grant budgeted for each community, the crime prevention strategy considers how the design of a physical environment, including building spaces within a community, can minimize opportunities for crime to occur. The public art aims to make the public spaces more appealing, useful and accessible, according to county officials.
