League City to paint ‘mini murals’; local artists encouraged to apply

To increase public art and make League City more attractive, officials are launching a campaign to paint “mini murals” on traffic utility boxes across the city through the fall.

Artists who live in League City and in the general Bay Area of Houston are encouraged to apply, according to a press release.

The city is working with UP Art Studio, which has an award-winning program that results in paintings on utility cabinets as seen regularly in Inner Loop Houston. UP Art Studio has produced more than 300 mini murals across Houston and Austin, according to the release.

To start, artists will paint five murals on League City traffic boxes in the summer and fall. Those interested in painting must register by March 31 at www.minimurals.org/artist-info.

Later, League City plans to expand the program by creating artistic “wraps” on traffic boxes created in partnership with Clear Creek ISD and through an open-call contest to allow residents to submit designs, the release reads.

Additionally, UP Art Studio is conducting a civic art feasibility and placemaking study to develop a plan to incorporate public art in city facilities, such as parks and buildings. The city also recently established a Keep League City Beautiful Committee made up of local artists and businesses that will advise the city on public art projects, according to the release.
