Bastrop Museum celebrates opening of Hispanic heritage exhibition

The Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center’s new "Hispanic Heritage, Bastrop Roots” exhibition spotlights Hispanic Bastrop County residents. The exhibition is free to the public and will run through Oct. 30 at 904 Main St.

According to a news release, former Elgin Mayor Ron Ramirez is the head of the five-member committee that conceived the new exhibition.

“I felt the need to see our Hispanic heritage story brought forward for recognition and for provocative and thoughtful conversation,” Ramirez said in a news release. “Knowing the right history ties me to Texas and can do the same for other Hispanic residents.”

The team helped bring the exhibition to the 21st century by conducting interviews with living descendants. The exhibition will also feature artifacts, photographs and oral histories.

“To have original research that we can rely upon is really exciting for our collection moving forward,” museum Executive Director Nicole DeGuzman said in the news release.

Following its time in Bastrop, the exhibit will travel around the region and is set to open at Elgin Depot Museum in January.
