The Austin ISD board of trustees named Ashley Gonzalez as its next chief of police at Monday night’s meeting. The action was approved with the consent agenda, and Gonzalez is expected to take his post May 24.
According to a resume posted by Austin ISD after the approval, Gonzalez currently serves as deputy chief of police for the Norwalk Police Department in Norwalk, Connecticut, and has 30 years of operational, investigative and administrative experience. Responsibilities in his current role include overseeing local school resource officers and managing a budget of about $24 million.
"Based on his expertise, years of experience and accomplishments, Ashley Gonzalez's name stood out among the candidates,” Superintendent Paul Cruz said in a district news release Monday evening. “Particularly, his ability to lead a department, his extensive training in school safety, and his reputation as being trustworthy and transparent brought him to the forefront. We wanted to ensure we had the best person for the job and the best fit for Austin ISD."
As chief of police, Gonzalez will be responsible for maintaining and enforcing policies, directives, standards and laws of the district and state, the news release states. He will also be responsible for the oversight of the district's full-time police officers, including school resource officers and patrol officers.
Gonzalez has an associate degree in criminal justice, a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration and is currently pursuing his master's degree in criminal justice, according to the news release.
