Austin-Bergstrom International Airport officials are predicting Labor Day weekend will see a surge of travelers and likely break records for another top 10-busiest day, ABIA officials said in a news release.

Passengers traveling during Aug. 31-Sept. 5 should prepare for a busy airport and arrive early.

Travelers using general Transportation Security Admission screening should arrive at least 2 1/2 hours before departure for domestic flights and three hours for international flights, ABIA officials said.

By the numbers

Over half of the airport’s busiest days ever were recorded in 2023. The top six-busiest days on record of outbound passengers saw over 36,000 travelers, an ABIA spokesperson said. The airport’s busiest day on record was Oct. 25 with 43,177 outbound passengers.

Some of the busiest days in 2023, which are also in the top 10 busiest days for the airport, include:
  • June 30 with 37,192 outbound passengers
  • March 10 with 36,841 outbound passengers
  • March 13 with 36,265 outbound passengers
  • April 17 with 36,253 outbound passengers
  • May 21 with 36,164 outbound passengers
May 2022 marked the busiest month in ABIA’s history with over 2 million passengers traveling through the airport that month.

What’s next

In 2021, ABIA launched Journey with AUS, an expansion and development program aimed at addressing passenger growth.

This will include the construction of a new midfield concourse, the area travelers pass through to arrive at their gates. ABIA settled two lawsuits June 1 for $88 million with South Terminal operator LoneStar Airport Holdings LLC to remove the terminal in 2025 to make way for the midfield concourse.

On Aug. 30, ABIA broke ground on a terminal expansion project as part of Journey with AUS. Construction is expected to be completed on the West Gate Expansion project in spring 2026 and will add 84,500 square feet over three levels to the airport.
