The mixed-age micro school currently serves nine full-time students and four part-time students, with a focus on hands-on learning and community-driven activities.
What happened
Since 2024, Apogee has subleased a classroom in Dripping Springs Presbyterian Church for school operations. As the lease agreement comes to an end, the congregation has grown and now needs the classroom space.
While founder and chief inspiration officer Sarah Pevehouse said she explored relocating to a commercial space, the leasing rates in Dripping Springs and West Austin were out of reach for a school of Apogee’s size.
How we got here
Apogee was established with a focus on small-group learning, autonomy and accountability. Pevehouse said that over the last two years, the school organized more than 50 field-based learning activities.

In addition to 13 part- and full-time students, Apogee also hosts nine additional homeschoolers at the Toastmasters for Teens program on Mondays.

“The program accomplished what it set out to do,” Pevehouse said in an email to Community Impact. “[To] demonstrate that small, mentorship-driven, experiential education can thrive and make a measurable impact.”
Pevehouse shared a comment from one of the founding families.
"He is thriving in public school now," Teresa Tautfest said about her child's transition following the news of Apogee's upcoming closure. "And I genuinely believe Apogee was a big part of what made that possible. You helped him reconnect with himself."
Pevehouse provided resources for families to aid in their search for a new school in an email to community members.
