Dubbed a “landmark project” by the company, the H-E-B on South Congress Avenue is expected to be ready for business starting the first week of December.

The details

Originally opened in 1957, the structure was expanded from 25,000 square feet to 69,000 square feet over the years, according to a new release. However, the original building was then demolished in February 2022 to make way for the company’s “reimagined store.”

The new 145,000-square-foot space will feature the full array of amenities that shoppers expect from a traditional H-E-B, including:
  • Curbside and home delivery services
  • Cooking Connection with live demonstrations
  • Healthy living, pet and beauty departments
  • Full pharmacy
  • Flower bar
  • Bakery
  • Beer and wine selection
  • Meal Simple section
  • House-made sushi
  • True Texas BBQ
Additionally, the location will include a ground level with indoor and outdoor dining, a second level with an assortment of products and three levels of above-ground parking with more than 600 spaces, the release states.

The project was originally set to be wrapped up by 2022, but faced delays as a result of COVID-19.

Quote of note

“Our vision has always been to create a store that our customers will be proud of, an iconic location that reflects the personality and vibrancy of the South Congress community,” said Cathy Harm, H-E-B Group Vice President Central Texas in a statement. “This store is an important part of this neighborhood, and we hope this new design conveys the deep gratitude we have for our loyal customers who have supported our business for more than 60 years.”
