Tim Jordan became the new Hutto City Council Place 4 representative after he was sworn by Judge Bill Gravell on Wednesday.

The ceremony took place in the council chambers at Hutto City Hall.

He replaces longtime Council Member Michael Smith, who resigned his position March 6 amid reports he owed back taxes for former businesses he owned in the city.

The city charter states council members and those running for council have to be current with tax payments to the city.

On March 16, the council voted 5-0 to appoint Tim Jordan to the Place 4 seat. He was to face Smith in the May 6 election, and although Smith’s name will remain on the ballot, he would not be allowed to take office if he has more votes than Jordan.

After the ceremony, City Secretary Seth Gipson went over an orientation of city procedures for council members with Tim Jordan.

“I am honored to have received the appointment to Place 4, filling the unexpired term,” Tim Jordan said in a news release from the city. “However, it is my intention to fill this position at the will of the voters on May 6, not by political appointment. I look forward to serving you and ask for your continued support and vote on May 6.”

During the March 16 City Council meeting, Council Member Bettina Jordan, who is not related to Tim Jordan, resigned her Place 6 position. Her position will be filled by special election, perhaps in June, according to Gipson, because she had two years remaining on her term. In a Facebook post, Bettina Jordan said she no longer had faith or trust in the current council or senior city leadership.
