The Pflugerville ISD board of trustees approved a contract to hire Quintin Shepherd as superintendent during a special board meeting April 29.

Shepherd will officially start in the role May 28, per district representatives.

How we got here

Steve Flores has served as interim superintendent since December, following the resignation of former six-year superintendent Douglas Killian. Killian announced his resignation after being named the lone finalist to serve as superintendent of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.

The board then began its superintendent search, which included a community survey, focus groups and "over 40 hours" of the trustee's vetting candidates, according to board President Renae Mitchell.

Shepherd, who served as superintendent in Victoria ISD for six years, was named as the lone finalist during an April 4 board meeting. Per Texas law, the board had to observe a 21-day waiting period before officially hiring Shepherd.

The plan

One of Shepherd's first initiatives will be a 100-day listening and learning tour called Discovering Pflugerville, where he said he will hear directly from students, parents, educators, staff and community members.

"It's a commitment to transparency, inclusivity and forward momentum," Shepherd said. "... Their insights will shape our immediate priorities and long-term strategy, ensuring that our path forward reflects the aspirations and challenges of our entire community. In line with the values of Pflugerville ISD, my plan prioritizes communication, students success and a culture of trust and collaboration. By embracing these diverse perspectives within our community, we'll craft policies and programs that truly resonate with everyone involved."
