ICNA Relief, an organization that provides social services across the U.S. to the underprivileged and those affected by natural disasters, will give out free backpacks from noon-2 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Islamic Center of Brushy Creek, 1950 Brushy Creek Road in Cedar Park. The drive is open to all residents in the metropolitan area.

The organization plans to set up a booth and tent in the parking lot of the mosque. Cars with children can drive up, and volunteers will help them select backpacks. Each child present is eligible to receive a free backpack and school supplies appropriate for their grade level.

ICNA Relief holds Back2School drives every year and also collects gently used or new backpacks in school bag drives held regularly.

The organization also partners with Central Texas Food Bank to distribute food every third Saturday of the month at the same location. Items are prebagged and include canned and dry foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat, milk, cheese and peanut butter, said Haider Imam, vice chairman of the board of trustees of ICNA Relief, Austin.
