Austin ISD officials have announced schools and offices will be closed for the second day in a row on Feb. 1 due to the winter storm.

This follows an announcement Jan. 30 that classes and offices would be closed Jan. 31 due to the extreme winter weather happening in Austin. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are set to hover near or below freezing all day Jan. 31.

"Already, all major roadways and bridges are iced over and dangerous to travel on," Austin Fire Department Division Chief Thayer Smith told Community Impact on Jan. 31."If you can stay home, please stay home."

A widespread freezing precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day and into Feb. 1. The NWS extended the winter storm warning that was originally set to end Wednesday, Feb.1, at noon through 6 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2.

"Austin ISD will continue to monitor the weather effects and receive updates from the National Weather Service," said Nayeli Montoyo, media relations specialist for AISD.
