Smith takes race for U.S. Representative District 21

According to unofficial results, Lamar Smith has won the Republic nod for U.S. Representative District 21. Smith, who received 60.4 percent of the vote, beat out Michael J. Smith and Matt McCall, who received 5.7 and 33.9 percent, respectively.

Smith, who received 40,262 total votes has recently turned his attention to immigration. In February, Smith announced plans to form a group of U.S. Representatives dedicated to increasing border security.

Smith also chairs the Science, Space and Technology Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.

Early voting results indicate Lamar Smith is leading the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Representative of District 21, the seat he has held since 1987.

According to the unofficial results, Smith has won 63.3 percent of the vote, leading challengers Matt McCall and Michael J. Smith, who received 31.9 and 4.8 percent of the vote, respectively, with 6 of 289 precincts reporting.
