After school closures since Jan. 31 due to winter weather sweeping over the region, Comal ISD opened all but two campuses at normal hours.

Smithson Valley High School and Smithson Valley Middle School were without power on the evening of Feb. 2 but estimated power would be restored by the morning of Feb. 6.

The district said they are aware some neighborhoods in New Braunfels are still without power, particularly in the region north of Canyon Lake and in the Spring Branch area.

“Please know that if a lack of power prevents your child from attending school tomorrow, they will be granted an excused absence for the day,” Comal ISD said in a press release. “You will need to send a note with them when they return on Monday.”

With Comal ISD stretching over 500 square miles, the impact from the weather event impacted families throughout the Hill Country differently in terms of ice, loss of power, and water and property damage.

According to the district, the decision to close campuses Feb. 2 gave them the opportunity to get most of the schools back online and provided families the chance to recover from the storm.

Additional information on campus operations will be posted on the district's social media accounts. More information regarding Comal ISD Emergency Communications can be found here.
