Cedar Park police officers plan to increase patrol presence in the weeks leading up to Labor Day.

From Aug. 18-Sept. 3, officers will work to discourage and monitor for impaired driving violations as part of the ongoing regional Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Initiative, according to a press release from the Cedar Park police department. The national program model combines intensive enforcement of a specific traffic safety law with communication, education and outreach informing the public about the enforcement activity.

The initiative will cover the peak Labor Day holiday travel period. Labor Day is Sept. 4.

“We encourage everyone to make the most of the remainder of summer by choosing to drive sober or designating a sober driver,” said Cedar Park Assistant Chief Michael Harmon. “It is important to consider the potential consequences of impaired driving including the very real possibility that a driver could end someone else’s life because of their irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel.”

During the last initiative, which took place around July 4, police officers made 14 driving while intoxicated arrest and one driving while under the influence minor arrest.
