PEC stated Monday that members have reported being approached in the last week by unidentified individuals claiming to be conducting energy surveys on behalf of PEC. The scammer may carry a clipboard, claim to be from PEC or a contractor working for PEC and may ask for personal information or request entry into a member's home.
"These people are not representatives of PEC and should not be given any personal information nor allowed entry into a person’s home or property," PEC said in a statement. "PEC will never approach a member to request an energy survey. PEC Energy Services conducts energy surveys upon request of the member."
To help with concerns, the cooperative provided information on identifying PEC workers.
- All PEC employees carry a company ID, and many travel in vehicles with PEC logos and wear blue PEC uniform shirts.
- Contractors will carry letters of authorization from PEC and will supply them upon request.
According to the company, PEC employees will never:
- Call to threaten a service disconnection if payment is not made immediately
- Ask someone to pay with a prepaid card
- Call from an out-of-state number
- Instruct someone not to call any other PEC number to make payment
- Have a technician call to say they are coming out to disconnect power
- Request a cash payment at the residential or commercial location
- Place automated calls outside of normal business hours (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), Monday through Friday
If approached by someone claiming to be completing a "power survey" or "energy survey" on PEC’s behalf, ask to see identification and contact PEC immediately at 1-888-554-4732.
