A 64.9-acre tract of land within the Goodnight development will be purchased by Austin ISD for the construction of a new high school in Southeast Austin. The cost of the land is $13,068,000 and is available through funds acquired during a December 2008 bond election.

"This is such a long overdue decision and solution and I’m thrilled to be able to bring it forward," Trustee Yasmin Wagner, who with Trustee Paul Saldaña was responsible for leading the effort, said. "This meets the needs not only of the southeast but also the southwest. This will truly round out our south high school needs."

The asking price is slightly above market value for property in the area, however according to documentation on the AISD website, the additional cost will be offset by the seller's promise to provide infrastructure improvements as part of the sale.

Additional funds from the 2008 bond election will be leftover to purchase additional impervious cover, or human-made surfaces that do not absorb rainfall, necessary for the expansion of Bowie High School.

The vote to approve the land purchases was unanimous by the board.
