A new survey from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute aims to find out how Texans get around and what resources they use to get to their destinations.

TTI launched a study Thursday with the support of the Texas Department of Transportation that asks residents a series of questions about their driving habits and how they make decisions regarding toll or high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

The results will be used in a research report that TTI will create to analyze how travelers access information on using toll lanes—often called managed or express lanes, depending on how the toll rate is charged.

“Managed lanes and express toll lanes often require the traveler to understand a lot of information,” said Nick Wood, an associate transportation researcher with TTI. “This information might be about toll rates, entry and exit points and vehicle eligibility. Many regions plan to expand these special lanes across a network, each with different toll rates and rules.”

Because many areas of Texas are planning or considering to add more toll roads and lanes, TTI wants to know how travelers would like to be informed about using these systems, he said.

In the survey, one question asks residents about new technologies being developed and whether they would like certain information sent to them via a smartphone or remain on a road sign. Other questions ask respondents about their usage of toll lanes. Survey questions are tailored for the Austin, Dallas and Houston metro areas.

The survey is open through early March and available at https://tti.tamu.edu/2017/02/02/attention-texas-travelers-we-need-your-input.
