In an attempt to restore a sense of normalcy for the children displaced by Hurricane Harvey, Austin Mayor Steve Adler on Tuesday called on Austinites to donate new toys through a newly-created toy drive.
“This next [donation effort for Hurricane Harvey victims] is easy; in fact, you could say it’s child’s play,” Adler said in a press release issued Monday morning. “Blue Santa wants Austin to collect enough new toys for every Texas child displaced by Hurricane Harvey, and I think this town is up for the challenge.
“Let’s make some happy memories for a lot of kids going through a tough time.”
The Texas Toy Drive is operating through a partnership with Operation Blue Santa—a 45-year-old nonprofit corporation organized by the Austin Police Department that looks to bring Christmas to needy children in the area. The donations received will be used to support children in disaster relief both locally and statewide.
The press release prioritizes donations of new toys, board games, playing cards, sports balls, crayons, markers and colored pencils, arts and crafts set, coloring books and puzzles. The donations will be provided to children of all ages, from infants to teenagers.
“Please avoid including any toy weapons, glitter, glue or food items,” the press release said.
Tuesday’s call to action was the third by Adler. Austinites came through in the prior two, with over 5,000 welcome kits for Hurricane Harvey evacuees and more than 500 animal crates for the Austin Animal Center.
Donations should be dropped off at the Blue Santa Warehouse at 4101 South Industrial Drive, Ste. 260, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donations will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 15. For more information, visit the Blue Santa webpage at
