Barton Springs Pool will close on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning March 21 due to the lack of open-water lifeguards. The pool will remain closed on Thursdays from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. for regularly scheduled cleaning.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s aquatic division stopped training lifeguards in spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release. The department started training again in 2021, but staffing was still an issue.

Lifeguards at Barton Springs Pool are required to get extra open-water guard certification and training. According to the press release, the pool has 23 available open-water lifeguards.

Until enough certified open-water lifeguards are hired, the aquatic division will keep the pool closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. The pool will still remain open to the public during the “swim at your own risk” swim times from 5-8 a.m.

The aquatic division has plans to keep the pool open at regularly scheduled times for spring break from March 12-20. This schedule is subject to change depending on staff availability. Visit www.austintexas.gov/pools for more information on modifications to operating hours and pool closures.
