Beginning March 30, Cedar Park drivers will notice a significant change in the traffic patterns along New Hope Drive from Main Street to CR 180—specifically the intersection of New Hope Drive and 183A Toll—as the city begins road work along the corridor.
The specifics
Dubbed the “183A Innovative Intersection” by the city, the left-turn lanes along the 183A frontage roads will operate differently, following a new route across the intersection to merge onto New Hope Drive.
The redesign will apply only to northbound and southbound drivers on the 183A frontage road turning left onto New Hope Drive. All directions of travel along 183A frontage roads and New Hope Drive will be maintained, according to city information.
“We, as always, encourage everyone to slow down, follow these posted signs and allow a little bit of extra travel time while people are getting used to this new pattern,” Dan Sousa, Cedar Park assistant director of communications and engagement, said.
Some context
This project is part of ongoing road improvements and economic development in Cedar Park and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2027.
In May, construction on a new Marriott hotel and convention center is slated to break ground less than a mile from the intersection, which is part of a larger mixed-use site called CedarView.
“Part of our agreement with the developer was that they would front the cost for some significant public improvements, including the expansion of New Hope from four to six lanes and the improved intersection at 183A, which is all under construction right now,” Randall Lueders, Cedar Park director of engineering and capital projects, said.
The project aims to cut down on traffic at the intersection while increasing capacity. While CedarView developers will front the costs of construction, the city will still ensure “all the rules and standards are being followed,” Lueders said.
After completion, the city will take over maintenance of the roads and signals.
“The great benefit of this project is we're getting some pretty significant public infrastructure improvements, which [are at] no cost to existing taxpayers, because the developers are paying for all these improvements,” Lueders said. “That being said, we're involved just like it's one of our projects.”
Looking ahead
As the project progresses, the city will continue posting updates to alert drivers of traffic adjustments. To avoid delays, the city advised residents to plan additional commute time or to opt for alternative routes.
