Coming from a real estate background as an apartment locator, Martha Benavides, owner of Tacos De Prisa Y Mas, said she has had her food trailer in Leander for a little over a year now. Tacos De Prisa Y Mas translates to “tacos in a hurry and more,” which the business illustrates in its logo—a taco lady with her purse and a coffee.

Although new to the restaurant business, Benavides said she has been cooking for years. She said she learned partially from her mother and taught herself the rest, developing a passion for it. Benavides attributes her good cooking to “having the hand for it.”

“My sister and I can make the same recipe, have the same ingredients, but mine always comes out better,” she said. “I think I just have that hand [for] cooking that it just comes out good.”

Tacos De Prisa Y Mas has several customers who visit the trailer regularly, and they enjoy the authentic tortillas made from scratch, the homemade sauce and portion sizes, Benavides said.

Benavides credits her authentic, homemade tortillas as one of the factors that makes her business unique. The difference between other restaurants and Tacos De Prisa Y Mas is that their homemade tortillas are made with premixed flour, and they just add water while Benavides mixes all of the ingredients herself.

The green sauce at Tacos De Prisa Y Mas is popular, and Benavides sells it by the jar. It is extremely hot; Benavides does not even eat it, but she said customers love it.

The food truck has struggled with inflated food prices, propane costs and occasional short staffing, Benavides said. However, she said her landlord has been supportive.

“She just really wants me to be successful, so she’s not really upping my rent,” Benavides said. “Now my struggle is the cost of food, propane and even finding good help.”

As one of the only breakfast food trucks in the city, there are no plans for the restaurant to expand to a brick-and-mortar location or to move outside Leander. However, Benavides said she is looking to add to her current menu of breakfast and lunch tacos by serving lunch plates. She is also considering purchasing a small trailer that would make it easier for her to travel and cater events.

She said she is happy to serve the Leander community.

“I really want to say thank you to the community for their support, for coming out, for the reviews,” she said. “Because I know without them, I couldn’t have done it.”
