The project includes repairing pavement that has settled at the west end of the bridge on Bethany Drive, which could cause safety concerns if not treated, city documents state. The project will also include replacing the adjacent sidewalk.
Construction will take place one lane at a time to minimize disruption to westbound traffic during the morning and evening rush hours, Director of Engineering Chris Flanigan said.
In addition, construction crews will repair the damaged median nose on Bethany Drive located east of Watters Creek Boulevard, which is in close proximity to the bridge, Flanigan said.
The city received four bids for the project and Garret Shields Infrastructure offered the bid with the lowest cost and least amount of time, per city documents.
The context
The Texas Department of Transportation inspects bridges within the city of Allen every two years, per city documents.
“It provides us an opportunity to package those observations for corrective repair in a way that we can cost effectively … remedy them,” Flanigan said.
In 2023 and 2024, Allen City Council approved spending $2.4 million to repair 16 bridges, per city documents. A bridge repair at McDermott Drive near Rowlett Creek costing $386,234 is currently under construction, he said.
Quote of note
“The expense is necessary to prevent worsening conditions, ensures safe travel on our roadways for the public and addresses the root cause of the issue, representing a permanent solution before it could get worse," Flanigan said.
