The $97.1 million Allen Police Department project is 76% complete and on budget, Director of Engineering Chris Flanigan said.
Allen City Council approved $2.6 million in furniture and equipment purchasing contracts for the new Allen Police Department Headquarters at an Oct. 13 meeting.
A closer look
Council members approved three purchases for exercise equipment, technology equipment and furniture for the facility.
The exercise equipment includes free weights, machines, weight bars, medicine balls and dumbbells, and costs $252,973, per city documents. The purchase of network switches and wireless access points will not exceed $500,000, Flanigan said. The office and dispatch furniture will cost $1.8 million, per city documents.
The costs were not included in the city’s initial construction contract, but were planned for in the $97.1 million budget. City officials opted to work with the vendors directly in an effort to seek lower costs, Flanigan said.
“The project is remaining on budget at a total of $97.1 [million],” Flanigan said.
How we got here
Allen voters passed an $83 million bond in 2023 to fund the project. The 103,000-square-foot, three-story facility will be located on Century Parkway, between Allen City Hall and the Allen post office, according to city documents.
Assistant Police Chief Kyle Taliaferro said the department has grown in size along with the city and outgrew its current facility several years ago. The new headquarters will include:
A large community room for public events
An expanded property and evidence room
A larger crime scene lab
Secure parking
Strategically organized workspaces
A human performance center dedicated to officer wellness
A spacious training room
Looking ahead
Police department operations are expected to move into the new facility in March, Flanigan said.
“Since groundbreaking back in 2025, we have hit every major milestone either on or ahead of schedule,” Flanigan said.
