Gary and Ronald Rodenbaugh’s dad, Donald, opened Rodenbaugh's Flooring America Kitchen Bed and Bath in downtown Allen in 1962.
Originally a radio and television repair shop, the business has evolved over the past 64 years and now offers appliances, flooring, countertops, mattresses and more.
A closer look
Rodenbaugh's Flooring America Kitchen Bed and Bath partners with brands like Cambria and Coretec.
“We try to stay with some name brands,” Gary Rodenbaugh said.
Gary Rodenbaugh said the business’s goal is to educate customers as they’re making decisions on home improvement projects. The appliance with the best value is not always equivalent to the appliance with the lowest cost, he said.
When a customer walks in and asks about flooring, employees take time to ask questions to better understand the customer’s needs, Gary Rodenbaugh said. Employees will ask about what room they’re remodeling, whether they have pets or a pool, and take a sample of the flooring over to the customer's house to make sure they like it in the space, he said.
Employees also try to “think outside the box” and offer creative solutions to customers' problems, Ronald Rodenbaugh said.
“These are the types of things that Dad taught us,” Ronald Rodenbaugh said. “It's not so much a problem. It's an opportunity for me to create a solution.”
Diving deeper
Rodenbaugh's Flooring America Kitchen Bed and Bath will connect customers to a network of service providers to fix their appliances.
“What we found is we can actually offer our customers better service when we give them a list of five different service centers, because now the chances of them getting same-day service are great,” Gary Rodenbaugh said.
This focus on customer education and service has helped the business create a reputation.
“Our business has been built on referrals, word of mouth and repeat business,” Gary Rodenbaugh said.
Also of note
Both Rodenbaugh brothers are involved in the Allen community. Ronald Rodenbaugh has served on the Foundation for Allen Schools board and Gary Rodenbaugh has been on the Lovejoy ISD board and the Collin Appraisal Review Board.
“Dad showed us, you know, the power of being involved,” Gary Rodenbaugh said.
