Here are six things to know this week if you live in The Woodlands area.

1. Although The Woodlands is known for its abundance of shopping options, communities on the east side of I-45 are beginning to develop their own commercial hubs.

The developer behind The Falls at Imperial Oaks has announced plans to build a retail and commercial shopping center and possibly a multifamily development along the Grand Parkway feeder road. Construction on south Montgomery County’s newest YMCA will also begin in the coming years in the same community.

2. The Woodlands has considered developing a cultural and performing arts facility for nearly a decade. This Wednesday, the township’s board of directors will consider approving a final agreement with a consulting firm to begin a cultural arts feasibility study to better develop a community vision for such a facility.

If approved by the board, the study would include a needs assessment and business planning phase.

3. The topic of the Montgomery County Animal Shelter—specifically, management and oversight of the facility—is once again on Tuesday’s Commissioners Court agenda. The shelter, which some county officials and citizens believe has been underfunded for years, has been under the county’s management since last fall.

The county began managing it after terminating a contract with Care Corporation due to concerns over poor conditions at the facility off Hwy. 242.

4. Interested in shopping for a good cause this week? This Thursday, the Wine Women and Shoes Houston event at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center features wine tasting, shoe and accessory shopping, silent and live auctions and a runway show. Proceeds benefit iGoPink and The Breast Cancer Charities of America. For more details and to buy a ticket, visit www.winewomenandshoes.com/houston.

Harris County proposes $105M Astrodome renovations5. Although the majority of The Woodlands is not in Harris County, if you have lived in the Houston area for long enough, you probably have some memories of the Astrodome. Harris County Commissioners will vote Tuesday on whether to move forward with the Houston Astrodome revitalization project, which would cost the county $10.5 million to complete the design phase.

The decision will come nearly three years after voters in Harris County rejected a ballot referendum to save the aging facility by turning it into a multipurpose special events center.

6. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 elections is approaching. Tuesday, Oct. 11 is the last day to register in Montgomery County. Find out what other dates you need to know here and see the Oct. 13 edition of Community Impact Newspaper for a detailed look at local races.
