Frisco resident Brandon Burden has filed for Frisco City Council Place 1 seat. The Place 1 seat has an unexpired term that is up for election again in May 2018.

A special election will be held on Feb. 18 to fill the seat.

Burden has lived in Frisco for 16 years and has been involved in the community through the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Frisco and working with local nonprofit groups.

“I’ve always been involved with the city, and now it's time for me to get involved at a higher level,” Burden said.

Burden is a business strategist for Fortune 5000 companies and small businesses. He said the skill set he has developed in his career would make him an invaluable addition to Council.

“I’ve spent most of my business career building infrastructure and helping people put strategies together, and I feel like Frisco is at a place now where it needs to really look at its infrastructure,” Burden said. “We need to start building for the generations because of the growth that we’ve had here.”

According to the city of Frisco’s comprehensive plan that was updated this year, the city is expected to have more than 350,000 people at built out.

If elected, Burden said one of the main issues he would like to tackle is infrastructure. He said he wants to make sure there is a proper infrastructure to maintain a large population.

Burden also said he would like to focus his attention in keeping the tax rate low.

“As we continue to grow, we’re going to have to really start looking at our taxes and see if the tax rate is commensurate with the property value,” Burden said. “At the [growth rate] we’re going, I think our property values may get out of control with taxes, and then people are going to start moving out of Frisco because cost of living is getting too expensive.”

Burden also wants Frisco to continue to attract cultural diversity.

“One of the great things about Frisco is our cultural diversity and with the growth, we’ve seen more international cultures move here and I think that’s a great thing,” Burden said.
