H-E-B representatives will host a public meeting Thursday to discuss the grocer's plans for a third H-E-B store planned at the northwest corner of the intersection of Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road in San Marcos. The meeting will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the City Park Rec Hall, 170 Charles Austin Drive, San Marcos. The H-E-B proposal has been met with backlash from some city residents who have voiced concerns related to flooding, traffic and environmental issues. See how the number of traffic accidents at some of San Marcos' busiest intersections—including those near the grocer's two other stores in the city—compare to those at the proposed site. According to data provided by the Texas Department of Transportation and the city of San Marcos, and compiled by Community Impact Newspaper, the intersection of Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road experienced the second highest number of reported crashes per 100,000 vehicle trips of any intersection included in the map between Jan. 1, 2013, and July 31, 2016. The LBJ Drive and Hopkins Street intersection in downtown San Marcos had the highest number of crashes per 100,000 vehicle trips during that same time period. City Council will discuss the issue and potentially approve a second and final reading of the proposal at its Sept. 20 meeting. Council approved the first reading of the proposal with a 5-2 vote. Council members Lisa Prewitt and Melissa Derrick voted against the proposal.
