The Pflugerville ISD board of trustees selected names for what were formerly known as High School No. 4 and Elementary No. 21 at their regular meeting Thursday night.

The decision came after calling on the public in September to submit names for consideration and hearing from citizens at the board’s October meeting.

Three names were considered for the high school: Weiss High School, Vernagene Mott High School and Veterans Memorial High School. The board ultimately selected Weiss High School as the name for the former High School No. 4, a name deeply rooted in the history of Pflugerville.

August and Caroline Weiss settled their family in the small village of Pflugerville in 1875. The family purchased 164 acres of land and established their homestead on Weiss Lane. Since then, generations of Weiss have grown up in Pflugerville contributing in a myriad of ways to the betterment of the community.

What was Elementary No. 21 is now Vernagene Mott Elementary. The board named the school after Mott, recognizing her lifelong dedication to education in Pflugerville. Mott currently serves as president of the Pflugerville ISD board of trustees and has served on the board since 2004. She was also a math and science teacher in the district for 35 years.

“She has truly devoted her life to this school district,” said Cynthia Sivek at the PfISD board of trustees October meeting, presenting a statement from Mayor Jeff Coleman.

But her contributions to Pflugerville go beyond PfISD. She has given to the community as a whole, giving her time to local nonprofit organizations and the Pflugerville Downtown Association. Mott has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Community Builder Award for her service to the Pflugerville Chamber of Commerce.

Both Weiss High School and Vernagene Mott Elementary are currently under construction and are slated to open fall 2017.
