Pflugerville ISD board of trustees voted June 23 to provide supplemental insurance for all its students, expanding a program the district has offered for student athletes previously.

Pflugerville ISD Chief Financial Officer Ken Adix said the supplemental insurance the district has provided student athletes in University Interscholastic League-sanctioned events helps a student if that student were injured playing sports and his or her family did not have insurance or their insurance would not cover the costs. He said now the district will be able to offer that help to all students in the district.

"What’s happened [previously] is students have gotten hurt and people asked, 'Can you help?'" said Superintendent Alex Torrez. "This is an affordable way to take care of students."

The board approved a contract with Health Special Risk for $59,208 to provide the insurance district-wide. Adix said another company provided a lower bid but the district has worked with Health Special Risk previously and knew they could trust the company.
