The Lower Brushy Creek WCID, a self-proclaimed little-known flood control district, will repair and rehabilitate flood control dams in eastern Williamson County.

Following the May 2015 floods, the WCID requested assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to repair two dams damaged by the high water.  The WCID recently awarded a $885,880 construction contract to repair the two earthen dams.  According to WCID General Manager Jim Clarno, the repairs will protect several county roads as well as private property downstream in the Turkey Creek area.

For several years, another dam located just east of Coupland has been considered a high hazard dam by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The WCID was also able to award a $1,687,572 construction contract to rehabilitate the dam to meet current state design criteria.  Clarno said the dam is 20 feet tall and nearly 1,000 feet long and was originally built as a low-hazard dam.

The repair of the three dams is being fully funded by grants from the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Service and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.  Construction on both projects will begin later this month.
