H-E-B announced Wednesday that it has issued a recall for both bulk and packaged raw shelled pistachios sold in its stores due to the potential they could be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall affects prepackaged plastic containers containing raw pistachios with either labels reading Shelled Pistachios or Central Market Shelled Pistachios as well as pistachios found in the bulk section with SunRidge Farms labels reading: Women’s Vitality Mix, Pistachio Nuts and Dark Chocolate Pistachios, according to an H-E-B news release.

Salmonella causes 1 million foodborne illnesses each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The elderly and those with impaired immune systems are most at risk of severe illness from salmonella poisoning.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include:

  • Diarrhea

  • Fever

  • Abdominal cramps

All of the pistachio products affected have been removed from stores, and no cases of illness have been reported to date.

Customers who purchased the affected product can return the product to the store for a refund, the news release stated. For questions or concerns, contact H-E-B Customer Service at 855-432-4438, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Central Standard Time.
