The Williamson County Commissioners Court met Wednesday to discuss the proposed fiscal year 2016-17 budget and added more than $791,295 to the general fund in the past two days.
The proposed budget for FY 2016-17 is now more than $283.3 million, which includes an additional $400,000 for law enforcement pay raises.
A proposed budget of more than $282 million was originally presented to the commissioners court at its Aug. 9 meeting. The proposed budget included more than $172 million in the general fund and more than $27 million in the road and bridge fund. During Wednesday's budget modification voting session, commissioners were allowed to discuss, add and delete items from the general fund and the road and bridge fund.
At Tuesday's commissioners court meeting, the court approved a 4 percent increase for noncommissioned officers and a 5 percent increase to commissioned officers and bailiffs.
On Wednesday an additional $391,295 was added to the general fund, bringing the new proposed general fund budget to almost $172.9 million. About $8.8 million is set aside for capital projects.
Other changes to the general fund included removing the $10,000 membership to the Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council and adding $150,000 to analyze and install security and camera systems in the county's justice center.
Commissioner Lisa Birkman recommended adding $179,522 for a license and weight position in the Williamson County Sheriff's Office. Patrol Captain James David said he expects all vacant patrol positions to be filled in the coming months and that another license and weight position is needed to ensure semitrailers are not carrying too much weight on the roadways.
After a lengthy discussion, the commissioners granted $20,000 to The Veterans Services Office, pending an analysis of existing operations. Veterans Services asked for an additional receptionist, totaling more than $43,000 to help with the high volume of requests they receive. Commissioners approved about half of the total funds to go toward software tools, an additional employee or recommendations from the analysis.
An administrative employee position for the Emergency Operations Center was approved by the commissioners, adding more than $51,000 to the general fund.
No changes were made to the road and bridge fund at the modification session, but another budget modification voting session will take place
