Today the historic Pfluger cemetery lies on private, undeveloped property and is usually only accessible by a large four-wheel vehicle. However, city officials say the burial grounds—which hold some of Pflugerville's founding residents—will soon be publicly accessible when local developer John Lloyd transforms the now barren fields into a large housing development expected to accommodate more than 6,000 residents.

The history of Pfluger Cemetery

Henry Pfluger, one of the founders of Pflugerville, died in 1867 and is buried at the Pfluger cemetery along with his wife, Christina, and several family members. The cemetery is located on private property and rarely visited, but the development of the Carmel residential complex and city park complex next to the historic site will now allow easy public access.

“It’s been challenging to get to all these years but I think with the city taking over that property it will be very accessible for folks to get to and to look at and walk through,” said Vernagene Mott, a descendent of Henry Pfluger who has helped preserve the history of the site.

The cemetery holds 18 graves, including those of several infants and children. Henry Pfluger was born in Germany and many of the Pfluger Cemetery headstones are written in German. The last burial at the site was in 1917.
