Austinites will celebrate the emancipation of Texas slaves June 21.

Some detours will be necessary to accommodate the Juneteenth Historical Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. June 21. The parade will wind through east Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Chicon Street and Rosewood Street, followed by music and community activities in Rosewood Park.

"This is the celebration of our freedom," said Tami Johnson, Juneteenth committee chairwoman. "It's a big day for African-Americans."

Johnson said there will be three stages for entertainment: one with hip-hop music, the next with R&B and a third with speaker Pastor Kevin Brown.

"Last year it was pretty nice. People came out in droves," Johnson said. "This year, I'm expecting the same."

With the anticipated mass of people expected to attend the day's activities, Capital Metro has created some short- and long-term detours.

Detours will begin at 7 a.m. June 21 for bus routes 2, 6, 18, 21, 22 and 320. Normal service will resume once the parade ends except for the No. 2 route, which will be detoured for the entire day.

"We recommend that folks expect more activity in the area," Capital Metro spokeswoman Melissa Ayala said. "There is potential for more traffic, more pedestrian activity, so just to factor in a little more time into their commute."

She warned those celebrating in Rosewood Park to stay off the rail tracks because they will be used until 4 p.m. for freight and in the evenings that for public transportation.

Folks can plan their way to the festival or other activities using Capital Metro's hotline, website, mobile phone application or texting service.
