Inside Lamb School: Nurturing minds, growing hearts and planting seeds of faith for a lifetime of learning

Children learning through faith-based activities at Lamb School at Met Christian Academy

At The Met Christian Academy, early education is more than ABCs and 123s; it’s about nurturing curious minds, growing hearts and planting the seeds of faith. At the Lamb School, children ages six months to pre-K explore the world while learning Christ’s love.

"At the Lamb School, faith isn't just taught; it's lived every day," Lamb School Director Kim Hegefeld said. "From singing Bible songs at circle time to praying for their friends, even our youngest students are learning kindness, curiosity and the love of Christ in real, meaningful ways."

Programs for every stage

The Lamb School, the early childhood education center of Met Christian Academy, provides a nurturing environment for children to grow academically, socially and spiritually. Its programs meet the developmental needs of each age group, ensuring a strong foundation in learning and faith.

The Lamb School offers programs tailored to each stage of early learning:
  • Infants (6–17 months)
  • Toddlers: (18 months–2 years)
  • Two-year-olds
  • Three-year-olds
  • Pre-K

Learning with faith at the center

“Our mission is to provide exceptional education devoted to Christian discipleship,” Hegefeld said. “We believe faith and learning are inseparable.”

The school emphasizes a love for God alongside academic curiosity, from infants to energetic pre-Kers.

Daily routines are structured to integrate faith into learning:
  • Bible storytime with songs
  • Morning prayers where children learn to pray for themselves and others
  • Weekly Bible stories that introduce foundational concepts
  • Weekly chapel sessions
  • Hands-on activities and crafts related to Bible stories to make lessons tangible
“Faith and teaching about Christ is our top focus,” Hegefeld said. “Children this age are sponges—they absorb everything around them, and we start with that foundation.”

Growing minds and hearts

At the Lamb School, learning goes beyond academics. Social and emotional development is as important as early literacy and numeracy. Teachers guide children in sharing, showing empathy, and resolving conflicts.

Children develop curiosity and creativity through hands-on activities, imaginative play, and collaborative projects. Students learn to ask questions, investigate, and think critically as they build, draw or explore nature—all while connecting these experiences to their faith.

“Character development is as important as reading and counting,” Hegefeld said. “We teach children to care for one another, show kindness and practice empathy—skills for life.”

Preparing for a life of faith

The foundation laid at Lamb School extends beyond early years. Students develop a strong, unshakable faith by learning about Christ’s love, prayer, Bible stories and reasons behind spiritual practices.

“When children start their faith journey at this age, it becomes a natural part of who they are,” Hegefeld said. “This foundation helps them grow into confident, compassionate individuals with an unbroken faith. They leave Lamb School ready for kindergarten academically and with hearts rooted in Christ.”
