That approach has led to something increasingly rare in healthcare: patients who stay, even when life takes them far away.
Over the years, several longtime patients who once lived locally have relocated or begun spending significant time out of state. Instead of starting over with a new provider, they chose to keep the relationship they had built at Tropical Dental Care.
One patient even accepted a position in a remote Alaskan town that can’t be reached by road. Yet she continues to fly back for care. At one point, the practice was caring for nearly eight Alaskan families making that journey.
For practice manager Brad Bowsher, that kind of loyalty isn’t the result of coincidence. It’s the outcome of a philosophy that has shaped the practice for decades: patients are family.
Where patients are truly heard
From the first visit, patients are told something that sets the tone for everything that follows.
“Once we’ve signed all of the documents and the consent forms, I say, ‘Now you’re family; welcome to our practice.’ It’s always been that way, ever since [founder] Dr. Friedrichs started [this practice],” Bowsher said.

That mindset shapes every interaction, from the way treatment options are explained to the follow-up calls patients receive directly from staff after procedures. The team prioritizes time, listening and trust, especially in a field where fear and anxiety are common.
“We are in the relationship business, not the dental business,” Bowsher said. “If we fail the relationship, we won’t get the humble honor of doing dentistry.”
It’s a belief that challenges the transactional nature many patients associate with health care. Instead of rushing appointments, the team focuses on understanding each patient’s life, concerns and long-term goals, and walking with them through decisions rather than pushing them toward one outcome.
“All of it is about love,” Bowsher said. “We’re here for our patients.”
Those small moments of care compound over time, creating relationships strong enough to last decades and sometimes generations.
Bowsher now regularly sees grandchildren of the practice’s earliest patients. Occasionally, he’ll pull up a patient profile and find a childhood photo still on file.
“Here comes a 26- or 30-year-old man, and the picture we have of him is from when he was eight,” Bowsher said.

One longtime patient, Alex Smith, said he was first referred to Tropical Dental Care by a friend a few years ago and has stayed ever since.
“It’s a family type of atmosphere,” Smith said. “Everyone is very friendly and cordial, and everyone is very professional in terms of the kind of treatment you get.”
Over time, that consistency has built trust that goes beyond appointments and cleanings. Even as individual providers have changed, Smith said the experience has remained the same: welcoming, attentive and personal.
A place that feels different from the moment you walk in
Patients often tell Bowsher they sensed something different before they ever sat in the chair.
“I tell patients when they first make the call, ... ‘This is a very special place, and when you walk in, you’ll know that,’” Bowsher said. “It’s warm, and it’s inviting.”
Smith echoed that idea.
“[The team] always makes me feel very at ease when I’m [there],” Smith said.
For Bowsher, the most rewarding moments are simple: seeing patients leave smiling, comfortable and confident, regardless of the complexity of their care.
