In 1876, the nonprofit opened its doors, serving cowboys, railroad workers and newcomers who were shaping a rapidly growing city. As the decades passed, the organization adapted through wars, recessions and sweeping social change, but its purpose never wavered.
“We’ve always been a place for our community to find hope and belonging in everything that we do,” Vice President of Marketing and Communications Shannon Gowen said.
That purpose is defined by the YMCA’s mission: to build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Today, it reaches thousands across the San Antonio region through programs that support every stage of life, from youth development and senior wellness to inclusive activities for people of all abilities.
“There aren’t many nonprofits or organizations that can say they have this kind of legacy, so this is definitely a huge milestone for us,” Vice President of Marketing and Communications Shannon Gowen said.

A sneak peek at the 150 Stories of Impact project
The YMCA is launching its 150 Stories of Impact project in January 2026 to celebrate this historic milestone. These stories, collected from community members, highlight the incredible ways the YMCA has touched lives.
Some stories that are currently available include the following:
“[I’ve been] able to gain friendships and connections from everything that they offer, from physical wellbeing to mental wellbeing,” one member said. “[The YMCA] has always been a place where I’ve felt supported to reach my goals.”
“About eight years ago, I became a single parent to five daughters, and I started working full-time for the first time in my life,” another member said. “I was not able to afford any sort of childcare. ... I went to the YMCA in New York, and I was able to apply for a scholarship for the girls to go to camps. ... We still have the fondest memories of how the Y served our family in a time that we were in our greatest needs.”
“It’s very fun, it’s very cool and it’s the best day care ever,” a young member said.
Together, these stories show the lasting impact the YMCA has had on generations of families.

Looking ahead: an ultra-accessible facility
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio will open its first ultra-accessible YMCA in January 2027, in partnership with Morgan’s Wonderland. The new facility is designed for everyone, making sure all members, no matter their abilities, can participate comfortably and fully.
“We’re always trying to find ways to better serve our community, making it more accessible and making sure that we truly are for all in everything that we do,” Gowen said.
The YMCA of Greater San Antonio creates spaces where people can connect, grow and thrive, from youth sports to senior coffee clubs.
As it marks this milestone, it does so with gratitude for its members, volunteers and staff, whose dedication has kept this organization thriving for a century and a half.
“Thank you, YMCA, and here’s to 150 years and 150 more years after that,” one member said.
