Hillwood’s $5,000 donation helps the Denton Community Food Center feed 50 families for a week

Hillwood representatives present a $5,000 donation to the Denton Community Food Center during a weekly food distribution, supporting hunger relief efforts and food insecurity assistance for Denton County families.

As the holiday season causes strain for many North Texas families, a $5,000 donation from Hillwood is helping ensure Denton neighbors facing food insecurity don’t have to choose between groceries and necessities.

On Dec. 17, Landmark by Hillwood—Hillwood’s first master-planned development in Denton— presented the donation to the Denton Community Food Center during its weekly food distribution. The contribution supports an all-volunteer, donor-funded organization that has served residents since 1974.

A neighborly investment in Denton

The donation reflects a long-standing commitment to food security across North Texas for Hillwood, now extended to Denton as Landmark takes root in the community.

“Helping our new neighbors in Denton is the most important thing we can do during the holiday season,” said Kimberly Cole and Andrew Pieper, co-project managers at Landmark by Hillwood. “We have a long history of supporting area food banks, and we hope our first contribution to the Denton Community Food Center brings even more awareness to the great work they do.”

DCFC can stretch each donated dollar through partnerships with food banks and retail suppliers. In Denton, $1 can provide a meal—and this donation is expected to serve about 50 families, each receiving 100 pounds of nutritious food, enough to feed a family of four for a week.

Why cash donations matter

Unlike many nonprofits, DCFC does not receive government funding and relies entirely on community donations and volunteers.

Cash donations give DCFC flexibility to meet immediate food needs and support households facing difficult life events.

“Beyond the cash value of assistance to hunger-insecure families and households, our goal at DCFC is to provide temporary assistance through challenging circumstances—job loss, layoffs, medical incidents or other unforeseen household emergencies—as many families in our area live paycheck to paycheck navigating the high cost of food, housing, childcare and medical costs,” said Tom Newell, Board Chair of DCFC. “We strive to bring hope, compassion and nutrition so that adults may provide for their family and be productive members of our workforce while children develop physically healthy and are attentive and learning in school to grow into productive citizens.”

Addressing hunger beyond the holidays

“Hunger insecurity receives considerable attention during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Over half of our annual food drive donations and a significant amount of our financial donations are received during November and December annually,” Newell said. “DCFC applauds the community support during this holiday time period. However, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that hunger is a year-round issue that we address every week.”

Hillwood’s $5,000 donation reflects a longer-term commitment to food security in Denton County.

“For nearly four decades, the Perot family and Hillwood have supported area food banks, including the North Texas Food Bank and the Tarrant Area Food Bank," said Page Austin, Senior Lifestyle Director at Landmark. “At our other communities in Denton County, we’ve donated more than half a million meals.”

As Landmark by Hillwood develops in Denton, Hillwood plans to continue supporting organizations like DCFC to help families access food and stability when needed.

Ways to get support or support the mission

Residents can get support or help DCFC in several ways:
  • Food assistance by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • Volunteer during food distribution hours
  • Donate to support DCFC
A call for Denton

Hillwood’s $5,000 donation reflects the company’s belief that strong communities are built through ongoing care and local partnerships. As Landmark by Hillwood joins Denton, it is committed to supporting organizations like DCFC that provide essential year-round assistance to local families.

Hillwood encourages Denton residents, businesses and future Landmark neighbors to support DCFC by volunteering or contributing.
